To set the context for this conversation about life purpose coaching, it’s crucial to remember that purpose has two parts: the seed of our purpose (who we’re here to be), and the way our purpose expresses itself based on the times we live in and how life has shaped us (the work we’re here to do).
Our purpose has been hard-coded into us since before we were born. It’s our inherent, built-in wiring, and it’s the “nature” element of being human. We enter this life with certain aspects of ourselves already in place, and we’re designed to grow into our fullest expression.
Unfortunately, the conditions are rarely right for this fruition to take place, as we’re immediately born into a series of man-made systems that are designed to strip us of who we are so that we can become cogs in a machine. Living out our short human lives in service of systems that exploit and cause harm.
The fact that we’re immediately and fundamentally affected by these systems for five to seven years before our conscious mind comes online (with its ability to accept or reject inputs) means that we’re operating under their influence on a deep, subconscious level. Every thought, feeling, decision, belief, value, and choice stems from these systems and how they’ve shaped us.
By the time we’re adults, our lens has already been colored, and we’re often making decisions about our lives and the world around us with that conditioning firmly in place.
Depending on our unique wiring and design, that degree of coloring varies. Certain personality and energetic types are more susceptible to influence, which causes them to stray further from the seed of their purpose. Others are wired in such a way that they remain more rooted, even if they’re unaware of their life purpose and how it wants to express itself at this time. However, that doesn’t mean they aren’t still operating in a way that’s misaligned with who they are at their core.
We’re like fish in this regard, and systems are like water.
Systems are everywhere, whether we’re aware of them or not, and they permeate everything (which means to spread throughout and be perceived in every part of something).
Why Do We Need Life Purpose Coaching in Every Conversation?
“Every” might seem like a bold statement, but we stand by it.
Think about it…
If social and systemic influences have been distorting our worldview and sense of self since we were born, and purpose is who we’re here to be and the work we’re here to do, how could it be anything but a crucial consideration for every major life decision?
Choosing what to focus on in school? If we don’t know ourselves, understand our specific systems of influence and how they’ve shaped us, or are still being run by our past traumas, core wounding, and limiting beliefs, how can we be sure we’re choosing what feels most aligned for us? Especially if we’re making this decision as young adults because we’re likely still entangled with our familial, cultural, and social systems of influence, all of which are typically ripe with personal opinions, projections, shame, judgment, and expectation. While it can take years to figure out “what we’re here to do,” life purpose coaching in this context helps us align with our inherent wiring, soul-level callings, and true interests.
Dating to find your partner? If we don’t have a deep level of self-awareness, decondition from social influences that tell us what we should want and why, or are still operating from reactive, defensive, triggered spaces, it’s going to be challenging to find our right person. We’ll likely still be repeating and deepening our attachment wounds (which we form as babies in response to our primary caregivers), chasing after people who check off the lists society has told us are important, or settling for less than we desire because we “should.” Life purpose coaching in this context helps us decondition from those external influences, heal past traumas, rewire unhealthy subconscious patterns, and understand who we are and how we function best, as well as what we need to do to heal and grow in a relationship.
Starting your own business? Similar to choosing a focus in school, we can easily wander down the wrong path as entrepreneurs if we don’t understand ourselves and decondition from social and systemic influences. Worse yet, if we don’t understand our energetic wiring, we fall prey to the lie of capitalism that says productivity equals worth, when only 70% of the population is actually designed for a “standard” workweek (but only if they love what they’re doing!) With a global population of around 8.2 billion, that means roughly 2.5 billion people aren’t designed for what capitalism demands and rewards. There’s no one right way to start or grow a business, which is why life purpose coaching in this context can be extremely supportive.
Figuring out health issues? First and foremost, studies have shown that having a sense of purpose is beneficial for our health, leading to a significantly lower risk of mortality. But what about when we face a significant health crisis? The reality is that much of the healthcare system falls short of its intended purpose (helping people heal and thrive) due to a variety of factors. With medical gaslighting, a massive lack of understanding and research around female health issues and reactions to treatment methods, and deeply embedded racism and harmful biases, navigating health issues requires a serious level of self-awareness, the ability to advocate for our needs, and an understanding of what works for us and what doesn’t. Life purpose coaching in this context can help us with all of these necessities, while also connecting us with our life’s purpose for motivation during more challenging moments.
Becoming a parent? If we’re raising small humans, life purpose coaching is especially essential, not just to understand ourselves and how we’re wired, but also to understand our children. Even the most well-intentioned, loving, safe, and caring parents traumatize their children simply because they don’t fully understand their child’s personality and energetic wiring. And even if they do, their child is still embedded into the same harmful systems, and navigating those effects requires a genuine understanding of the child because how they’re influenced and impacted will vary greatly compared to their parents.
These are random examples to illustrate the crucial role of life purpose coaching, regardless of the conversation.
This doesn’t mean we can’t make moves in our lives without engaging in life purpose coaching directly; it means that understanding purpose (and our individual life purpose) is a pathway toward more aligned living and better decision-making.
This is because life purpose coaching helps us understand:
How we’re wired. One way we connect with the seed of our purpose (who we’re here to be) is by understanding our personality type and unique energetics. These are the elements that define who we are and guide us in living our fullest expression.
Our subconscious winning strategy. This is our base operating system for everything. Formed before our conscious minds came online, within a limited number of relationships and spaces, our subconscious winning strategy is inherently narrow by nature, yet it’s influencing every conscious choice we make with one aim: to keep us feeling safe, secure, successful, loved, and like we belong so that we don’t experience any risk.
Our past traumas and stored emotions. As mentioned above, no matter how lovely our childhood or uneventful our life has been up to this point, we all have trauma. We all have unprocessed and unresolved emotions that are stored in our bodies and nervous systems on a somatic and cellular level. Whether we’re conscious of them or not, they continue to influence our behavior and often keep us rooted in our interpretations, stories, and fears.
Systems thinking and systemic influence. To live our purpose and make aligned decisions in life, we have to free ourselves from systemic conditioning. To free ourselves from systemic conditioning, we must understand systems and their influence (especially those systems that frame our individual lives, as they can vary greatly, having a different combined effect). Only when we understand systemic influence and work to decondition on an individual level do we have the freedom and leverage to make fully conscious and resonant choices.
If life purpose coaching doesn’t address these elements, we recommend pausing and asking some questions to determine if the container or coach is qualified to support you. Believe it or not, many in the life-purpose coaching industry don’t fully factor in who you are and how you work best, which is foundational to anything and everything you could possibly discuss with them!
Let’s be clear, none of this means we have to spend a ton of money on life purpose coaching in any form (coaching, programs, books, etc.).
Life purpose coaching is a form of personal development and life coaching that aims to help people discover, clarify, and align their lives with a deeper sense of meaning, purpose, and fulfillment.
It can be incredibly supportive when we’re working to uncover our purpose in life, navigate significant decisions or challenging chapters, and stay rooted in who we’re here to be, but that doesn’t mean you need to spend money if it’s not aligned or not currently needed.
In fact, it’s our mission to get more people thinking about and working with life purpose differently, and we offer an abundance of free and low-cost resources to get you started.
